The Song In My Head Today : Barenaked Ladies – Brian Wilson

51p4K2ufpVL (1)You know for sure that a band doesn’t take itself seriously when song names such as ‘Be My Yoko Ono’ and ‘If I Had $1.000 000’ appear on their debut album. Yet, the college-nerdy, alternative, Canadian group Barenaked Ladies have made a good impression on me so far, despite not being familiar with anything that came after. But how did I get into them in the first place? Through this here song that carries the name of my favourite musician of all time, Brian Wilson – the genius behind The Beach Boys.

That’s all I’m gonna say about him though, otherwise you’ll probably have to assist to over ten paragraphs of noting but over-the-top fanboy worshiping, without even mentioning the song in question again. And that would be a shame, since I really like it. It’s got a reasonably sad vibe (unlike most of the album), as the protagonist seems to resemble Brian’s feelings at those particular dark times in his life and feels like “lying in bed”, just like he did. Oh well, the fact that Brian didn’t get out of bed for three years is a complete myth, but that’s a whole different story.

But in the end, it feels like a tribute song more than anything, with all those Brian Wilson-related name-droppings such as Dr. Landy – the controversial psychiatrist that sort of both saved and damaged Wilson’s health, Smiley Smile and Fun, Fun, Fun, a Beach Boys album and respectively, song, or the famous “sandbox”, which Brian used to have in his living room (which is also often pointed to as the beginnings of his mental decline, but come on, it’s just a fun idea after all).

But of course, I don’t want you to think that it’s only the subject matter that I like. No, I think this is a very easy-going acoustic song, with a rather pretty melody and catchy chorus. So my advice for you is definitely to give it a try, whether you’re a Brian Wilson fan, a 90’s alternative rock one, both of them or even neither.

Also, in 2000, the man himself covered the song as a 50-seconds acapella piece:

  1. Brian Wilson also features one of my favourite examples of backup vocals – towards the end when Ed echoes ‘late night record shop’ – great stuff!

    • I agree. I think it was none other than Paul McCartney who admitted to being a Barenaked Ladies fan and even said that he thinks they’re better than The Beatles when it comes to harmonizing and singing. Or something like that.
